The rebellion of 1857 was the first blow to British Raj. In this rebellion many great people took part and their name is Rani Lakshmi bai, Kunwar Singh, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Nana Sahib and Tatya Tope.
The most important cause of 1857 freedom struggle was the British policy of economically exploiting India. This hurt all sections of society. Indians had to undergo hard times due to high revenue demands and the strict revenue collection policy.
The British policy of territorial annexations led to the displacement of a large number of rulers and chiefs. The vigorous application of the policies of Subsidiary Alliance and Doctrine of Lapse angered the ruling sections of the society. Rani LakshmiBai and Nana Sahib became bitter enemies of the British and led to the revolt in their respective territories. The 1857 freedom struggle ended on 1 November 1858.
